when a draw is a victory
By: j | August 10th, 2008I prefer not to fan the flames of discontent regarding poor refereeing but when matches are decided with questionable decisions, the game suffers. Such is the case with the Monterrey versus Chivas match which fortunately ended in a draw or this would have been a horrible disservice to the fans and even respect for Football in México.
The match was evenly played for the most part and I’m fairly comfortable at saying in the first forty minutes, no team was truly deserving of the victory more than the other. What happened over the next few minutes was simply was a abomination of refereeing and controlling the match. With Edgar Iván SolÃs moving towards the left side of the box trying to get a clear shot at goal, he very clearly took a swan-dive with Severo Meza in front of him and Felipe Baloy closing behind. While I was surprised to see the spot pointed to, this is certainly not the first-time a penalty was awarded with a bit of quality acting, nor will it be the last. Yet after the first penalty was saved by Jonathan Orozco and then called-back for re-take, quality decision-making left Jalisco. Upon the re-take Ramón Morales calmly stepped-up for his second go and put the ball into the back of the net to give Chivas a 1-0 lead. With blood boiling well-over, Ricardo Lavolpe erupted, was expelled and I suspect will face a match-ban to some degree. Quite honestly, with an unbiased heart that wants to see Football in México recognized for its quality around the world, this was a horrible call and management of on-field duties.
The Rayados pressed hard but the ultimate finish was lacking and it appeared that they were headed for a loss. Then with seven minutes left in the match a stunning combination between Humberto Suazo and Carlos Ochoa, with Chupete flicking the ball to Carlos led to the tying goal. A brilliant end to a match that if it hadn’t be for that score, would have been remembered for a very questionable moment. Over the last two matches Humberto is showing a much greater maturity with his passing and his game is skyrocketing.
