Toluca match review
By: j | September 15th, 2008In a midfield “battle” Monterrey and Toluca wandered aimlessly to a nil draw. The match was definitely weighed-down with poor finishing form and opportunities to score were few and far between. Both ‘keepers, Jonathan Orozco and Hernán Cristante fought-off taking a nap through the match as they faced a whopping three shots combined and most of the errant shots were barely worthy of ticking on the score-sheet. If anything separated the match from being a friendly, it was that it had a physical edge to it with eight yellow cards, twenty-seven fouls in which many challenges that could have been carded as well. So yes, it was chippy, undisciplined and lacked flourish – not exactly a marketing sound-bite. Without Jared Borgetti in the Monterrey starting grid with Humberto Suazo, the offensive punch was absent and while I’m very pleased to see the second clean sheet in a row, I’m hard pressed to call this a “defensive mastermind.” It wasn’t and simply both clubs, whether through fatigue or the result of the time off, didn’t look capable of attacking and this match painfully lingered on and on. Either way the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Asociación should consider in the future if matches should be held so close to internationals as this honestly was a poor representation of play in México.
The Rayados return home next week to face Morelia.
