Puebla match in brief

By: j | July 27th, 2008

The crescendo of last season left Rayados fans with a highly optimistic hopes for today but with a modest 2-2 draw against Puebla, those high-flying dreams were put on hold.

The match belonged to La Franja and their highly supportive fans who withstood the blazing mid-day sun. However their is no reason to point blame at the heat or anything else, Puebla simply out-worked Monterrey for every ball and challenged every opportunity. What the home squad lacked in offensive firepower and creativity was made up for with solid marking and disciplined play but most of all, the make Cuauhtémoc a strong-hold.

To analyze the weaknesses in the Rayados today would simply be over-analysis at this stage. I am very confident of the man-power, the leadership of Ricardo Lavolpe and believe there is a great season ahead. However todays result should have been expected and they are actually lucky to escape with a draw. If there is blame to lay it is organizational one, of starting a training camp alternating from training on the beaches of Acapulco to a lush grounds of a golf course. Couple that with a promotional tour in the United States, todays performance was of a squad still weeks away from optimal levels and stuck in the pre-season form. If the Rayados are going to excel in modern game, those approaches need to be forgotten and pre-season needs to be run professionally, with jobs on the line.
