On the bright side…
By: j | May 23rd, 2008The 1-1 draw last night came with a few hidden surprises and hopefully something we can draw upon in the second leg this Sunday at Estadio Corona in Torreón.
On the positive side, with Severo Meza being sent off with his second yellow card eighteen minutes into the match, Monterry showed rare stellar defensive abilities, playing a man down for most of the match. A particular highlight and pleasant surprise was the play of Rayados Goalkeeper, Johnathan Orozco, who frustrated Santos on many occasions.
The match was off and running quickly and with Monterrey scoring at the ninetieth minute on a nifty chip from Humberto Suazo over the Santos goalkeeper, things were looking very good. However after the sending off of Meza for a hand-ball, Santos continued to pressure, with numerous opportunities spoiled by Orozco, but tied the match early in the second-half with a strike by Christian Benitez.
This draw puts Monterrey in a difficult situation as with Santos holding the better regular season record, a draw will see them through. Santos is an extremely tough team at home and because of the limited size of the venue, Monterrey cannot expect significant supporters there. With the Monterrey needing a win to advance, this might be the occasion when we see Ricardo Lavolpe unveil the new attacking formation they have been working on with three strikers.
