Monterrey v Puebla match preview
By: j | January 17th, 2009The VÃctor Manuel Vucetich era begins today in earnest as Monterrey face Puebla in the opening match of Clausura 2009. Following the deplorable Apertura campaign, which saw the Rayados fall to within three points of the bottom of the combined table, management decided to make a number of changes bringing in Osvaldo MartÃnez, Juan Carlos Medina, Luis Alonso Sandoval, Gerardo Galindo, Diego MartÃnez, Aldo de Nigris and Walter Ayovà from Ecuador’s El Nacional. Yet beyond moves on the pitch nothing overshadows the stunning departure of Ricardo La Volpe and in remains to be seen how the club will adjust to the radically different style of Mr. Vucetich.
The prior campaign was plagued with horrible disciplinary problems and the managerial change is an opportunity to lay down a tougher business like manner. Poorly disciplined play was only matched with unprofessional displays where players lacked self-discipline and embarrassed themselves. The hope is that those days are long behind them and they will begin to play to their ability.
Tactically, the counter-attacking style appears to be shelved although the club will play a higher tempo and we should expect more physical play. Within training the majority of time has been spent within a 4-4-2 or a 4-5-1 with Humberto Suazo set as the lone striker.
As always I will report on the match as it concludes.
