key start to the campaign against Puebla
By: j | July 25th, 2008
Remarkably as the season is just about to start, the first match is an important six-point affair against fellow-Group rival Puebla.
Puebla, while in their first match since being promoted to La Primera División, will be no-means be a push-over and I expect the people of this beautiful historic city to pack Cuauhtémoc and provide an enormous advantage. The squad, with its noble background in the sport, is intent on a return to its former glory and the table is set for a upset.
The Rayados have had an intriguing pre-season. I’m not prepared to condemn play as I recognize the tour of friendlies in the United States was more a goodwill mission than true preparation but they certainly haven’t hit full stride yet. However with the pre-season now gone, has valuable time been wasted or has this been part of the process of not revealing too-much, too-soon? Sadly I cannot answer that with confidence now but know full well that answer is coming when they step on the pitch.
Puebla will look to attack voraciously on the wings and gain a quick advantage. The match will be won with tactical midfield play, work-rate, effective counter attacking and for Humberto Suazo and Jared Borgetti to find the same goal scoring touch of last campaign. The backline of Joel González, Felipe Baloy, Diego Ordaz and José Basanta will be called-up to seal up the weaknesses that troubled last season and push forward the attack. José, not even with the Rayados for a month, has assimilated well into the system given the common denominator of tactical experience with Ricardo Lavolpe and the Argentine systems. Tactically this is exciting match to watch and will provide many clues to the season.

Lavolpe’s choice of players that he cut from the squad is.. unusual, Rayados needs to see better days.

James – thank you for your comments, they are appreciated. I think Mr. Lavolpe has something very interesting in the works and trying to re-work the club unlike any other in the La Primera División. However this pre-season certainly has been odd as I really don’t think the US tour was a great use of time. Lets see how the match evolves but I’m expecting a heavy counter-attack style -

Yeah, I hope so too. Lavolpe is really unique about how he presents his attack minded football, and he really loves the game, you can see how much passion he has for it. Hopefully Rayados can make a push for the title.
