Cruz Azul match review
By: j | August 24th, 2008Monterrey lost a tough 3-2 match to Cruz Azul after taking a 2-0 lead on the strength of two goals by Humberto Suazo. The first came of a penalty kick at the twenty-seventh while the second – well, let me stop for a second – the second reaffirmed his brilliance on the pitch and my contention that he is the best striker in La Primera División and equally why many clubs around the world are trying to lure him away from Monterrey. Unfortunately for Monterrey a match is still ninety minutes and Cruz Azul treats their home as fortress. With that in mind, la maquina celeste dug-in and gained control of the match with quick one-touch passes, spreading the field and attacking the channels. With every move of the Rayados, they countered properly and at the forty minute mark Pablo Daniel Zeballos on a deft pass from Rogelio Chávez brought them within one. Unfortunately the weaknesses of Monterrey’s passing and slow decision making process was evident as they played into Cruz Azul’s strength. At this stage Monterrey needed to control tempo, move the ball properly but instead the smashed the ball ahead and basically allowed Cruz Azual to control play. The match was brought level at the fifty-fourth minute by Nicolás Ignacio Vigneri from Jaime Lozano and it appeared to be heading to a salvageable draw before disaster struck with twelve minutes left. With Jaime Lozano fed a ball through the box and heading unimpeded, Jonathan Orozco came out to meet him and when diving somewhere in the general vicinity of the ball (i.e. not within three meters) he effectively made a try-saving tackle. Unfortunately this isn’t Rugby and he horribly timed his challenge, particularly when you consider the ball seemed beyond Jaime Lozano’s reach and that he wasn’t even remotely close to the ball. He tackled him and the awarding of the penalty was appropriate. Without hesitation, Jamie Lozano stepped-up to take the penalty, plunked into the back of the net to finalize a great comeback and seal Monterrey’s fate for another poor loss.
The Rayados need to respond quickly as they are falling down the table and far from the title dreams of a month ago. They face Club Necaxa in Aguascalientes in a mid-week tussle and are desperate for points.
