a defensive lapse
By: j | May 25th, 2008Depending on who you were cheering for, the Santos – Monterrey match was either a triumphant comeback or a heart-breaking conclusion to a triumphant season.
With roughly fifteen minutes left in the match, Monterrey’s fortunes looked good. After losing Felipe Baloy early in the match with an injury, the defense was looking suspect but held Santos thanks once again to the heroics of Jonathan Orozco. After a goalless first half, the Rayados took the lead with goals by Jared Borgetti (52′) and Humberto Suazo (63′) and things were looking pretty-good.
Then at the seventy-sixth minute, Vicente Vuoso headed home Santos first goal to start the comeback. Ricardo Lavolpe tactically substituted Chupete for Egidio RÃos four minutes later as Santos continued to swarm at a feverish pace. Nearing the end of the five minutes of added-time, Fernando Arce scored to bring the game to a 2-2 draw and eliminate Monterrey.
It was a difficult ending to a brilliant first season led by Ricardo Lavolpe that leaves all Monterrey fans extremely optimistic over the future. I’ll be posting a season review shortly as well as major concerns to be addressed.
